Mulank and Bhagyank: The Two Core Numbers in Numerology

13 July 2026

Mulank and Bhagyank

If you’ve ever had your numerology chart read, chances are the very first thing the astrologer asked for was your date of birth — and the very first two numbers they calculated were your Mulank and Bhagyank. These two numbers form the foundation of Vedic numerology. Everything else — your Vedic Grid, your lucky numbers, your compatibility with others — builds on top of these two.

Let’s break down what they actually mean, and exactly how to calculate them.

What is Mulank?

Mulank, also called the Psychic Number or Driver Number, is derived from the day you were born — nothing more. It represents your core personality: how you naturally think, react, and present yourself to the world on a day-to-day basis. It’s ruled by a specific planet, and that planet’s traits color your personality.

Think of Mulank as your “operating personality” — the you that shows up in daily life, in how you make decisions, how you communicate, and what instinctively drives you.

What is Bhagyank?

Bhagyank, also called the Destiny Number or Life Path Number, is derived from your full date of birth — day, month, and year combined. While Mulank shows who you are day-to-day, Bhagyank shows the bigger picture: your life’s direction, your karma, and the larger purpose you’re working toward.

If Mulank is how you drive, Bhagyank is the destination you’re headed to.

How to Calculate Mulank

This is the simpler of the two. Take just the day of your birth date, and reduce it to a single digit by adding the digits together.

Formula: Add the digits of your birth day until you get a single digit (1–9).

Example: Suppose you were born on the 28th.

  • 2 + 8 = 10
  • 1 + 0 = 1
  • Mulank = 1

Another example: Born on the 15th.

  • 1 + 5 = 6
  • Mulank = 6

If you were born between the 1st and 9th, your Mulank is simply that number as-is (no reduction needed).

How to Calculate Bhagyank

This uses your entire date of birth — day, month, and year — all added together and reduced to a single digit.

Formula: Add every digit of your DD/MM/YYYY birth date together, then keep reducing until you get a single digit.

Example: Suppose you were born on 28 November 1995 (28/11/1995).

  • Add all the digits: 2+8+1+1+1+9+9+5 = 36
  • Reduce further: 3 + 6 = 9
  • Bhagyank = 9

Another example: Born on 05 March 1990 (05/03/1990).

  • Add all the digits: 0+5+0+3+1+9+9+0 = 27
  • Reduce further: 2 + 7 = 9
  • Bhagyank = 9

Why Both Numbers Matter Together

A numerology reading rarely looks at Mulank or Bhagyank in isolation — it’s the relationship between the two that tells the fuller story. Someone might have a Mulank that makes them naturally bold and quick-decision-making, but a Bhagyank that steers their destiny toward a slower, more deliberate life path. Reading both together — and how compatible or in-tension they are — is where a lot of the depth in numerology comes from.
